Journey to the Centre of the Earth

Journey to a New World: Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

First published in English in 1871, Journey to the Centre of the Earth is the classic science fiction tale of a professor who believes there are volcanic tubes going towards the centre of the Earth.

In an effort to test this theory, Professor Lidenbrock, his nephew Axel and their guide Hans descend into an Icelandic volcano and embark on an adventure beyond their wildest imaginations.

Whilst it is true that since its publication much of the science in the novel has been disproven or brought into question, the novel reminds us that we don’t always need to leave the planet to find new worlds. There are a plethora of worlds to explore in the geological make up of our Earth, meaning that the possibilities for discovering worlds we have yet to fully understand and explore really are endless.
