Navigating in Space

We watched as Tim Peake and his Expedition 47 colleagues dock with the International Space Station on 15th December 2015 but just how did they get there?

ESA have a dedicated team titled the Flight Dynamics team whose job it is to manage complex computational techniques in order to plan, control and keep track of a spacecraft’s trajectory. Using a combination of physics and mathematics, they are responsible for both the craft orbiting Earth and also those exploring deep space.

In this film, they talk about some of the processes they engage with in order to ensure that a spacecraft safely navigates its way to the intended destination and also remains on course throughout its mission.
